A vehicle with a mother and four young children inside was hit by gunfire when over 25 shots were fired in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood Wednesday night, police say.

Portland Police Bureau officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 13400 block of Southeast Harold Street about 9:30 p.m. Officers said they found over 25 bullet casings in the street and two vehicles that had been hit by gunfire.

A stray bullet shattered the glass of the vehicle with the mother and four children inside, injuring a 10-year-old girl near her eye, police say. It was not a life-threatening injury.

According to the officers, a bullet missed the back of the head of the mother by inches, who was driving the vehicle. The other children in the vehicle were aged 11, nine, and seven.

No one was directly struck by the gunfire, and police believe the mother and four children were not associated with the shooting in any way.

The Portland Police Bureau asks anyone with information about the shooting to call the non-emergency line at 503-823-3333.
